The learning of the Spanish language has experienced significant growth in Greece and Cyprus over the last 25 years. This growth is reflected in the high level of student participation in official DELE (Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language) exams, which have become internationally recognized. In 2015, more than 67,000 candidates participated in DELE exams, which are held in over 120 countries and 350 cities worldwide. Greece accounted for 3.4% of all DELE exam registrations that year, ranking ninth globally.

DELE diplomas (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera, Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language) are among the two official internationally recognized language proficiency certificates (the other being SIELE) that prove knowledge of the Spanish language. They are organized by the Cervantes Institute (Instituto Cervantes) and issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport of Spain. These diplomas are considered proof of Spanish language knowledge for various professional and educational activities that require such knowledge and have unlimited validity.

There are six DELE diplomas available for adults and young people aged 16 and older, corresponding to the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and increasing levels of difficulty:

• DELE A1
• DELE A2
• DELE B1
• DELE B2
• DELE C1
• DELE C2

Additionally, there are two school-level diplomas for students aged 11-17:

• DELE A1 escolar
• DELE A2/B1 escolar

In Greece, DELE exams are conducted five times a year at the Cervantes Institute examination centers in Athens (in April, May, July, October, and November), Thessaloniki (in May and November), Patras, Ioannina, and Larissa (only in May). Registration for these exams must be done on specific dates set for each examination session.
